    No-one should ever wear cotton or synthetic socks with combat boors or any other outdoor footwear. Both will cause blisters and encourage fungal infections like Athlete’s foot. Cotton does this because when it gets wet it stays wet and doesn’t breathe. The cotton fibres swell closing off the gaps between the fibres that allow the feet to breathe. The fibres also become hard, and this causes blisters. Synthetic socks are a prime breeding ground for the bacteria that causes Athlete’s Foot. They don’t breathe or “wick” . The only socks to wear with boots are high wool content socks – at least 70% wool. This is the only blog written by a supposedly outdoors “survival” specialist I’ve ever come across who doesn’t say this – leaving me to think they’re not as expert as they claim.
